What is Good With Money?

Good With Money is a newsletter about women, money and power.

My clients tend to be women in midlife who want to become earners. They grew up with the message (either explicitly or implicitly) that they wouldn’t have to worry about money, that someone else would take care of them. And for most of them, someone else has. All goes well, until it doesn’t.

Maybe her spouse is fed up with being the sole provider.
Maybe her spouse wants to retire.
Maybe one of them wants a divorce.
Maybe her spouse is struck down by illness.
Maybe nothing happens except she wakes up to the fact that if she needed to support her family, she couldn’t, and that’s a terrifying thought.

When a woman in midlife decides she wants to become an earner, it’s never just about the money. Her conditioning shows up, and suddenly she’s struggling with letting go of people pleasing, years of believing she’s not good with money, and having to stand in her own value amidst the not-so-quiet doubts of those around her.

It doesn’t help that money is a taboo topic and so loaded with shame for most of us that we rarely speak about it in any meaningful way. Nor do we have frank conversations about our relationship to power. Things are different here at Good With Money, though. We talk about it all. We laugh a lot, too.

Who is Laura Gates-Lupton?

Laura Gates-Lupton is a financial feminist and former psychotherapist. She transitioned to coaching in 2012, and received her coaching certification from iPEC in 2013. A seasoned clinician with a master's degree in clinical social work, Laura brings a unique combination of psychological and practical support to her clients in her work as a mindset and strategy coach for women who want to make more money. Her approach is based on a three-pillar framework which includes embracing power, growing financial identity, and amplifying impact.

Laura lives in a sweet house in Cincinnati, Ohio with a smart and vocal kitty named Purrcy, and her lovely housemate, Mandy. (Sorry, Mandy— Purrcy demanded top billing.) Laura loves to spend time with her young adult children, to hike, write, cook delicious vegetarian food, read great books (especially memoir), and spends hours everyday on Voxer having deep and fun conversations with her clients and business besties. She is co-host (along with Linda Katz) of the Woman Uncaged podcast, and co-founder (along with Suzanne Culberg) of the Sistermind Roundtable. In her spare time, she has a side gig editing women’s memoir and personal growth books-to-be.
